ONS: Jump in construction

Friday August 12th, 2011

New figures released from the Office for National Statistics have shown a surprise jump in construction output.

The industry grew by 2.3% in the second quarter of the year compared with the previous three months, indicating a bounce back from the declines in winter and spring.

The latest confirmed figure for growth is much faster than the 0.5% figure used in the ONS’ recent GDP estimate for overall UK economic growth.

The ONS said: “Given today’s figures for construction output, GDP growth in the second quarter would be revised up by 0.1 percentage points.”
