York sees large increase in small businesses start-ups
More small businesses have started up in York than ever before, according to new figures.
The latest data, taken from a national BankSearch survey, shows a 9.2 per cent increase in new businesses starting up in the city during 2011 compared with the previous year.
Out of all 15 local authorities in the region, York is in the top three for the largest percentage increase in business start-ups when compared with 2010.

Cllr James Alexander, Labour Leader of City of York Council, said: “This suggests there is growth in enterprise at the small start-up end, but the key for us will be to continue to provide proper support so that these businesses can not only survive, but indeed thrive.
“This is why we’re continuing to work closely with the Federation of Small Businesses and the Property Forum to ensure we create not only a supportive business environment in York but also that the right premises are available.”
