Street lighting partnership could continue
A successful partnership between councils and a contractor that has helped improve street lighting services in both areas could be extended.
The Street Lightning Partnership between Tayside Contracts and Dundee City and Perth and Kinross Councils has reduced costs and improved efficiency.
Will Dawson, convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee, said: “The current partnership agreement comes to an end in March after a second successful three-year period.
“I am keen that we continue with the present arrangements, which have the potential to deliver even more improvements in the future.”
According to a report to be considered by the city development committee, the partnership has continued to improve performance over the past year.
Street lights in Dundee have fewer faults, and those which occur are fixed more quickly and cost less than in any other Scottish city.
Comparisons carried out by Society of Chief Officers of Transportation in Scotland (SCOTS) show that on any evening Dundee has only three lights per 1000 not working compared with up to 12 times as many in other Scottish cities.
If the partnership is agreed for another three years, further improvements will be made in a number of areas including LED light technology and reductions in fuel and repair costs.
The partnership between Dundee City Council and Tayside Contracts repairs and maintains 24,129 street lights in the city.
In a separate item councillors will also be asked to extend the partnership between Dundee City Council and Tayside Contracts to deliver road maintenance and minor works.
