Newcastle City Council commits £1m to tackle unemployment
Newcastle City Council has committed £1m in funding for a range of community and voluntary sector groups which will provide skills, training and support to those without work.
The new scheme will be delivered by a variety of different organisations including Building Futures East, First Step North East, JET, Mental Health Matters, Newcastle Futures Limited, Own IT Ltd, Scotswood Area Strategy, The Cyrenians, and Tyne Housing Association Ltd.
Newcastle Futures will receive £300,000 from the Council in 2011-12 in addition to £200,000 through the Newcastle Fund.
This will enable it to play a key role in providing intensive one-to-one support and advice to unemployed residents facing the greatest barriers to employment. It is also hoped that Newcastle Futures will become a sub-contractor of the Work Programme, helping ensure that it is delivered effectively across the city.
Newcastle Futures will be able to support other initiatives, including the introduction of an effective chain of Work Clubs across the city, working with Jobcentre Plus and other partners providing support directly to residents in local communities.
Gillian Hewitson, Chief Executive of Newcastle Futures said: “It is great news that Newcastle City Council remains committed to helping people find work by working in partnership with ourselves, Jobcentre Plus and our community partners.
“At a time when getting a job is difficult, it’s going to take all partners pulling together to ensure that the residents of Newcastle get good outcomes.”
