London hospitals told they could slash nursing bill by £421m

Tuesday February 7th, 2012

Consultants McKinsey have presented 18 London hospital trusts with a report claiming that £421m could be saved by the authorities over the next three years by changes to nursing.

The report, which was released after a request under the Freedom of Information Act, was originally commissioned by the strategic health authority NHS London and offers advice on hopw the NHS in London can make savings worth £1.27bn, with nearly a third of the total coming from changes to nursing.

The document said that no clear link had been found between increasing the number of nurses and providing good patient care, which suggested to McKinsey there are ways to improve care through ‘efficiency improvements’ which include reducing staff numbers in certain areas.

Analysis by Nursing Times recently indicated the more registered nurses that a trust employed per bed, the fewer of its patients were likely to die or experience long hospital stays.
