Liverpool to have directly elected mayor

Wednesday February 8th, 2012

Liverpool City Council has voted in favour of changing the local authority’s constitution to allow for the election of a city mayor.

Elections for the mayor will take place in May at the same time as local government elections, with the elected mayoral official taking up their responsibilities a few days after.

The mayor will provide leadership and represent the city locally, nationally and internationally. They will also work towards building the confidence of investors and directing new resources to economic priorities.

The elected mayor will be in power for a period of four years and will select their cabinet from the city’s 90 councillors.
