Glendale contract saves North Somerset £1m

Tuesday April 30th, 2013

Government Opportunities (GO)A new contract to manage North Somerset’s grounds maintenance, street and beach cleaning, litter collection and tree surgery contract will deliver savings of over £1m and divert thousands of tonnes of rubbish away from landfill.

The new seven-year parks and street scene contract with Glendale Services began on 1 April and will ensure that the district’s local neighbourhoods are maintained safely and are attractive to users and visitors.

The contract combines grounds maintenance, street cleansing, litter collection, beach cleansing and tree surgery into one value for money contract.

These works used to be carried out by different contractors but by combining them the council has created efficiencies to help save money without impacting on performance.

As part of the contract Glendale will increase the amount of litter and road sweepings that are recycled rather than sent to landfill. This will save a minimum of an additional £1.1m over the lifetime of the contract by diverting this waste from landfill.

Glendale will also donate 25,000 summer bedding plants to local community groups. This will help support the many successful initiatives by volunteer groups and town and parish councils, especially the Britain in Bloom groups, who help brighten up parks, open spaces and streets.
