Fife Council: GO Awards Scotland finalist

Thursday October 18th, 2012

With the GO Awards just days away, Government Opportunities talks to Fife Council, a finalist at this year’s GO Awards Scotland…

1)    Why did you decide to put yourselves forward for the GO Awards Scotland this year?

Fife is one of the leading green councils and was the first Scottish Local Authority to be awarded the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Silver Pledge Award for purchasing sustainable wood and paper. We wanted to continue to raise the profile of sustainability and the role of responsible procurement in achieving savings for, and adding value to, local authorities during difficult economic times.

2)    What do you think sets you apart from the other nominees in your category/categories?

We have worked proactively with other council functions, suppliers and organisations to set out new standards and new ways of thinking and working for a large public sector organisation. We hope that the work we’ve done so far will set a benchmark and have a real impact on the environment given the scale of the council’s procurement.

3)    What would be the biggest benefit to your organisation from winning a GO Award?

A better understanding of the positive impact procurement can have on cross-functional projects for the organisation.

4)    What would you say has been your biggest challenge in the past year and how have you overcome it?

Overcoming the perception that products certified as sustainable are of inferior quality or cost more than alternatives.

This misconception was dispelled through contract management, robust supply chain management and ongoing engagement and communication. Plus, the proof is in the pudding! The procurement team has been able to deliver fully certified products within budget, to everyone’s satisfaction.

5)    What’s next for your organisation?

We’ll continue the good work that’s already underway and aim to be the fist Scottish council to achieve the WWF Gold Pledge  Award.

Fire Council are a finalist at this year’s GO Awards Scotland, which takes place on Tuesday 23 October at Marriott Hotel, Glasgow.
